The Critical Role of the Board in Enterprise Risk Management
Val Christensen will be discussing the "critical role of the board in enterprise risk management." He will be sharing his experiences dealing with risk mitigation and crisis management, including while he served as the President and CEO of EnergySolutions, Inc. (NYSE), a global nuclear services company specializing in decommissioning nuclear facilities and safely managing radioactive materials. After the Fukushima Japan earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster, EnergySolutions was chosen to assist in the clean-up effort of more than 160,000 tons of contaminated water from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant. Val will talk about how a board may anticipate enterprise risks and how he structured and implemented effective crisis avoidance and risk management systems.

Val ChristensenUntil March 2012, Val Christensen served as President and CEO of EnergySolutions, Inc. (NYSE), a global nuclear services company specializing in decommissioning shut down nuclear facilities and safely managing radioactive materials. Mr. Christensen joined the company as Executive Vice President/General Counsel in March 2005, after serving 14 years as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of FranklinCovey Co. (NYSE), an international corporate training and consulting firm. Mr. Christensen served as an inside director on the public company boards of EnergySolutions and FranklinCovey, and as an independent director on the board of Dynatronics, Inc. (NASDAQ), a manufacturer and distributor of health rehabilitation products. Mr. Christensen served as a member of the audit committee and chaired the compensation committee of the Dynatronics board. From July 1, 2013 until June 30, 2016, Mr. Christensen served as President of the Russia Yekaterinburg Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, overseeing the administration, operations and missionary work of the Church in central Russia. Mr. Christensen presently serves on the board of directors of InvestmentBank.com, a company providing a suite of technology tools, advisory services, and transactional support to the middle market in the acquisition and sale of privately-held businesses & business assets. Mr. Christensen received a BA degree in Economics from Brigham Young University. He received his Juris Doctorate degree from the Brigham Young University Law School, following which he served as a Judicial Law Clerk on the U. S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. As a practicing attorney prior to his long career in the corporate world, Mr. Christensen represented a large number of start-up, emerging growth and mature companies in business entity planning, formation and governance - negotiating and preparing commercial contracts - structuring business asset, stock and equity transactions - and resolving business, contract, and commercial disputes. Mr. Christensen has been a frequent lecturer on business and legal topics, including corporate strategies, effective business negotiations, successful integration of merged and acquired companies, litigation management and avoidance, and professional and business ethics. With over thirty years of professional experience as an executive officer and General Counsel of both closely held and publicly traded companies, the CEO of a highly regulated public company, and a director of both publicly traded and privately held corporations, Mr. Christensen has extensive experience and expertise in anticipating enterprise risks at the board level and then assisting management in structuring and implementing effective crisis avoidance and risk management systems and initiatives.
